10 Tips on How to Revive a Completely Dead Motorcycle Battery

I am often asked how to revive a completely dead motorcycle battery. In truth, once a battery reaches a certain point of discharge it can be a bit challenging, but sometimes if you get lucky it can be possible. Here is a little step-by-step guide should you decide, you would like to give it a go.

Safety First

Working with batteries can be hazardous due to the potential for acid spills, explosions, or electrical shocks. Ensure you’re working in a well-ventilated area to disperse any hydrogen gas that may be released to reduce exposure to acidic vapours the charging cycle causes, dissipate heat generated during charging, and remove any unpleasant odours produced. This promotes a safer working environment by minimising the risk of fire, respiratory irritation, overheating, and discomfort. Wear gloves and eye protection to prevent contact with battery acid.

Inspect the Battery

Look for any visible damage such as cracks, bulges, or leaks. If the battery casing is damaged, it compromises the structural integrity of the battery, which can lead to several risks: it’s not safe to attempt revival, and you should replace it instead. It should be replaced because it poses risks such as leakage of corrosive electrolytes, potential short circuits, increased risk of electrical shock, and reduced battery performance and lifespan due to exposure to contaminants.

Clean the Terminals

Corrosion on battery terminals forms due to chemical reactions between the terminal metal and environmental factors like moisture or electrolytes. This corrosion creates a layer of non-conductive material that disrupts the electrical connection between the battery and the motorcycle’s electrical system. Corrosion on the terminals can prevent proper electrical contact and reduce the battery’s effectiveness. Use a wire brush or battery terminal cleaner to scrub away any corrosion, ensuring good connectivity between the battery and the cables.

Check the Electrolyte Levels

If you have a non-sealed battery, you can check the electrolyte levels by carefully removing the caps on top of the battery. Add distilled water if the levels are low, but be careful not to overfill as this can lead to acid spills. Overfilling a battery with distilled water can dilute the electrolyte, increase the risk of leakage and acid spills, cause battery damage, pose safety hazards, and have adverse environmental consequences. It’s important to follow manufacturer recommendations for electrolyte levels and handle batteries with care to prevent overfilling and minimize the risk of spills.

Charge the Battery

Use a motorcycle battery charger to slowly recharge the battery. Connect the charger’s positive (red) clamp to the positive terminal of the battery and the negative (black) clamp to the negative terminal. Follow the charger manufacturer’s instructions for the charging process.

Prevention of Battery Damage

Rapid charging can generate excessive heat, which can damage the battery’s internal components, such as the plates and separator materials.

Reduction of Sulfation

Slow charging allows for more complete charging cycles, which helps prevent the formation of sulphate crystals on the battery plates.

Safety

Slow charging reduces the risk of overcharging, which can lead to electrolyte loss, overheating, and potential battery damage. It also minimises the risk of electrical arcing or short circuits, which can occur with rapid charging.

Optimal Charging

Slow charging allows for more precise control of the charging process, ensuring that the battery is charged to the correct voltage and capacity without overcharging or undercharging.

Trickle Charge

If the battery is deeply discharged, consider using a trickle charger or battery optimiser. These chargers deliver a low, constant current over a longer period, which can help revive a dead battery without damaging it. Trickle chargers are valuable tools for maintaining the health and longevity of motorcycle batteries, especially during periods of storage or infrequent use. They help prevent sulfation, maintain charge levels, and ensure that the battery is always ready for use when needed.

Monitor the Charging Process

While the battery is charging, periodically check its temperature. It allows you to detect any abnormalities or potential hazards early on. If it becomes excessively hot, disconnect the charger immediately as it may indicate a problem with the battery or charger. It could indicate a malfunction or overheating, which poses a safety risk.  By monitoring the charging process, you can ensure that the battery is not being charged beyond its capacity. Excessive heat can negatively impact the battery’s performance and lifespan. High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions within the battery, which can lead to accelerated degradation of internal components. By preventing overheating, you can maintain optimal charging conditions and prolong the battery’s longevity. Overall, monitoring the charging process and being alert to signs of excessive heat are essential for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the battery and charger. It allows you to detect potential problems early on and take appropriate action to prevent damage or accidents.

Test the Voltage

Once the battery is fully charged, use a multimeter to measure its voltage. Set the multimeter to DC voltage and connect the probes to the battery terminals. A fully charged battery should read around 12.6 to 12.8 volts. Testing the voltage of the battery provides valuable information about its state of charge, charging status, health, and contribution to the motorcycle’s electrical system. It helps ensure optimal performance, reliability, and longevity of the battery and electrical system as a whole.

Load Test

If you have access to a load tester, perform a load test on the battery to assess its capacity to deliver power under load. This test applies a load to the battery while measuring voltage drop, providing a more accurate indication of the battery’s health.

Simulates Real-World Conditions

During a load test, a simulated electrical load is applied to the battery, mimicking the conditions it experiences during normal operation. By subjecting the battery to these conditions, a load test provides a more realistic assessment of its ability to deliver power when needed.

Assesses Capacity Under Load

Provides a more comprehensive evaluation of its performance and ability to meet the demands of the motorcycle’s electrical system.

Identifies Weaknesses and Defects

It can reveal weaknesses or defects in the battery that may not be apparent during voltage testing alone.

Predicts Battery Failure

Load tests can help predict impending battery failure before it occurs. Weaknesses or defects that manifest under load may indicate that the battery is approaching the end of its service life and should be replaced to avoid unexpected failure.

Reinstall and Test

Reinstall the battery on your motorcycle and attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts smoothly and the electrical system functions properly, the battery revival process is successful.

Finally, if after a good overnight or day charge the battery still has not come back to life, do not waste any more time or energy trying to recover it. Dispose of the battery responsibly and replace it.

    Le ranger au garage. Racheter casque U et, au plus tôt faire la vidange s’il daigne si ce n’est être en contact une fois la batterie chargée du moins changer l’huile qui se dégrade avec le temps vidanger le réservoir le circuit de refroidissement et de freinage idem
