Cleaning and Preparation
Thorough Cleaning
Start with a comprehensive cleaning to remove dirt, grime, and debris that can cause corrosion. Use a gentle motorcycle-specific cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge. Pay special attention to areas like the wheels, and chain. Do not forget to lubricate your drive chain well after washing.
Waxing
After cleaning, apply a high-quality wax to all painted surfaces. Wax adds a protective layer against moisture, which is crucial in preventing rust and corrosion.
Lubrication
Lubricate all moving parts, including the chain, cables, and pivot points. Use a suitable chain lube and ensure all parts are well-oiled to prevent moisture from causing rust. Use ACF 50 on all other metal parts to protect from rust and corrosion NEVER USE ACF 50 ON WHEELS OR BRAKES.
Battery Maintenance
Removing the Battery
Ideally, remove the battery and store your bike in a cool, dry place indoors. This prevents the battery from freezing and ensures it stays in good condition.
Battery Optimiser
If removing the battery is not feasible, use a battery optimiser to keep it charged. Ensure the battery tender is suitable for outdoor use and protected from the elements.
Tyres and Suspension
Tyre Pressure
Overinflate the tyres slightly to compensate for air loss over time. Regularly check and adjust the tyre pressure.
Suspension
Ensure the suspension is in good condition. Lubricate any exposed parts with ACF 50 and consider covering them to protect from moisture and freezing.
Covering the Motorcycle
Waterproof Cover
Invest in a high-quality, breathable, waterproof motorcycle cover. Ensure the cover fits snugly but allows some airflow to prevent condensation buildup, which can lead to rust and mould.
Secure the Cover
Secure the cover with straps or bungee cords to prevent it from blowing off in high winds. Ensure the cover is properly secured at the bottom to keep out moisture and pests.
Winter Storage and Protection
Location
Choose a sheltered location for storing your motorcycle. Ideally, place it next to a building or under a canopy to protect it from direct exposure to snow, rain, and wind.
Ground Protection
Where possible place a moisture barrier, such as a piece of plywood or a rubber mat, under the motorcycle to prevent moisture from the ground affecting the tyre and undercarriage.
Fluids and Antifreeze
Coolant Check
Ensure the coolant is topped up and contains antifreeze to prevent the cooling system from freezing. Use a hydrometer to check the antifreeze protection level.
Oil Change
Consider changing the oil before storing your motorcycle. Fresh oil prevents contaminants from sitting in the engine over the winter months.
Exhaust and Air Intake
Air Filter Protection
Check the air filter and clean or replace it if necessary. Cover the air intake with a breathable material to keep out debris and moisture.

Make sure that your bike is locked as securely as possible. Minimum security should be a disc lock on the front wheel and chain around the rear wheel, but you really can never put enough locks and chains on your bike. Lock, lock, lock.

Before taking your motorcycle out in the spring, conduct a thorough inspection. Check all fluid levels, tyre pressure, and battery condition. Look for any signs of damage or corrosion.
Test Ride

Washing and Waxing
